We Found Out About You

Your mother and I decided to start a blog for you, and in truth, it’s for us as much as it’s for you, to help us remember everything perfectly.
We’re currently in the middle of week 14, and you are growing like, well, a piece fruit––a morphing piece of fruit according to most of the pregnancy literature. It’s a system that is flawed (for instance, you were the size of a peach but grew into a lemon), but it’s so darn cute that I won’t question it any longer. Though you are already a fledgling, active little fetus, I want to tell you about when we first found out you were coming. Then, we’ll get you caught up.
We lived in Seattle (where your mom and I are living at the time of this entry), but we were in Ontario, CA, for my sister’s (your aunt’s) wedding to her fiancé (your uncle) Theron. We were staying at my mother’s (your grandmother’s) house and we knew you might be growing inside your mom, but we weren’t sure. Your mother bought a test to see if you were inside her, and on January 31, 2009, the day of your aunt Emily’s wedding, we found out about you.
My first reactions weren’t what I expected: shock, happiness, fear, nervousness, love. You were coming. You were coming soon. I had to prepare myself, prepare a home, get a better job, save money, take care of your mother. It was a lot to consider. But I was ready.
The first time we saw you, you were tiny. In fact, that picture above is the first picture of you ever. You were 10 weeks old.
The nurse used a special machine to find you in your mother’s tummy, and when we saw you, you were wiggling and squirming all over the place. We were expecting you to be much calmer for such a little thing, but you were awake and ready for action. At that moment, everything changed. You were in our lives. Really. The nurse told us we were safe, that you were healthy and nothing bad would happen to you. I started to cry.
We have other things to say, so I’ll leave more for another time. This was the beginning of your life with us.
